What is an ATEX certificate?

ATEX certificate confirms that a device or system can meet all requirements of the European ATEX guidelines and thus be used safely in areas at risk of explosion. The certificate is a prerequisite for the sale and operation of appropriate products within the EU.

What are the requirements for ATEX certification?

The most important requirements for a ATEX certification are:

  • The product must be designed in such a way that ignition sources such as sparks, hot surfaces or static electricity are excluded.
  • It has to be a clear one Marking (e.g. ex-sign) and a technical documentation.
  • A quality management system is required for production.
  • The requirements are based on the Device category and the intended ATEX zone (e.g. ATEX zones simply explained).

How does the ATEX certification work?

The course of the ATEX certification includes the following steps:

  1. Definition of the type of infection and device category: The manufacturer determines which zone the product should be suitable for.
  2. Conformity assessment procedure: Depending on the category, an internal production control or an external examination is carried out by an ATEX certification body.
  3. Pattern: An independent test center tests a pattern of the product for compliance with all security requirements.
  4. Quality assurance: The manufacturer must prove and document a quality management system.
  5. Exhibition of the ATEX certificate: After a successful examination, the certification body issues the certificate and the product receives the ATEX identification.
  6. Regular monitoring: Compliance with the requirements is checked regularly.

You can find more about the process in Guide to ATEX zones.
