In addition, we always strive to present innovative solutions that not only meet the latest technological standards, but also meet the strict ATEX guidelines for explosion-proof operation. Whether it is Floor measuring devices For areas at risk of explosion or Zener barriers, our goal is to offer products that are more than fulfilling their expectations.
Our comprehensive services also take a central importance. In a personal conversation we take time for your request and are there for you even after buying your ATEX devices. A quick handling of orders is a matter of course for us. In this way you get your delivery quickly and can immediately use the ex-protected device. For this we always keep a large stock of ATEX-certified devices in stock.
What are the requirements for ATEX devices?
If air, a source of ignition and combustible gases, fog or vapors or flammable dust come together in one environment, there is the highest risk of explosion. In order to protect environments and people who work in such risky environments, ATEX devices were developed that are designed to reduce the risk of explosion due to their special construction. Therefore, strict security standards are required, all of which must be met.
The so-called ATEX guidelines of the European Union form the framework for this. In turn, it is divided into the ATEX operating directive (ATEX 137) and the ATEX product directive (ATEX 114). Anyone who produces ex-protected devices must have them certified according to the ATEX product directive. This should ensure that all electrical and mechanical components do not create sparks or arise hot surfaces that can contribute to an explosion as a source of ignition. A corresponding labeling is mandatory.
According to the ATEX operating directive, employers are obliged to implement and document appropriate security measures. This also includes training courses and security checks. We are happy to support you in this area.
Certified ATEX devices on the "ex-badge" can be seen.
In addition, ATEX-certified devices are divided into zones and device categories that meet the specific security requirements. You will receive an exact overview in the further course.
Why are ex-protected devices so important?
As already mentioned, ex-protected devices are indispensable if you want to minimize the risk of explosions in explosive environments. This affects both the work environment and the health of your workforce. In addition, you may comply with compliance with legal regulations such as the ATEX directive, which prescribes ex-protected devices in endangered areas. Also think of occupational safety here.
How do ATEX devices create a high level of security? They are designed in such a way that all electrical components are sealed in such a way that even in the event of a defect, no sparks or excessive heating from inside can urge. During production, it is sometimes used to be flammable materials and special alloys, which even withstand a considerably high pressure, which is not released even in an emergency.
Where are ATEX articles used?
In general, all areas in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere, composed of air, combustible gases, steaming, fog or dusts, prevails with ex-protected devices. The measured amount of fabrics is decisive for this. Therefore, ATEX products are also divided into three ex-protection zones, which helps you find a solution that is suitable for your operation.
The degree of the risk is assessed using frequency and duration of the occurrence:
Zone 0/20: An explosive atmosphere occurs constantly, long or frequently.
Zone 1/21: There is occasionally an explosive atmosphere in normal operation.
Zone 2/22: A dangerous, explosive atmosphere occurs rarely or briefly during normal operation.
Some industries are predestined for ATEX products and are among the largest customers. These include, for example, the oil and gas industry, mining and chemical processing systems as well as processing companies, color and paint factories, sewage treatment plants and the pharmaceutical industry, to name just a few.
Which ATEX device meets your claims?
Ex-protected devices must fit seamlessly in their surroundings and meet the corresponding requirements. It is therefore important that you make your selection well informed and well -founded. Always pay attention to the explosion protection sign and check the following conditions that we have put together.
1. zones
In the first step, define the zone in which your ex-protected devices are to be used. For gases and vapors, zones 0, 1 and 2 and for dusts the zones 20, 21 and 22. Rate their environments based on measured values with regard to the explosive atmosphere or dust atmosphere. Be sure to get advice from an expert expert.
2. Device groups
The ATEX directive divides products into two device groups: Group I For use in mines and Group IIfor all other explosive areas. Within these groups there are the Device categories M1 and M2 for Group I, 1, 2 and 3 for Group II, which define the safety requirements based on the probability of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere.
The more likely the presence of such an atmosphere, the higher the safety requirements for the devices.
Category 1 devices have to meet a very high level of security and are intended for areas in which explosive atmospheres occur constantly or frequently, analogous to zones 0 and 20. Category 2 devices are intended for areas in which explosive atmosphere occasionally occur according to zones 1 and 21, while Category 3 devices can be used in areas where the occurrence of rare and brief nature is as in zones 2 and 22.
Example: For use in Zone 1 you need a device of the Category 2G (G for gases).
3. Protection class
The protection type of an ATEX device determines its construction. The aim here is to prevent the penetration of explosive gases or dusts and avoid ignition sources.
The common protective types include
- The pressure -resistant capsule (ex d), in which a robust housing catches internal explosions without it getting outwards.
- The increased security (ex e), which prevents sparking and high temperatures through additional measures.
- The self -security (ex I), in which the electrical energy is so limited so that no ignition sparks or temperatures arise.
- The forgiving capsule (ex m), in which electrical components are embedded in the forgotten mass in order to isolate ignition sources.
- Protection by housing (ex t), which prevents the ingress of dust and limits the surface temperature.
When selecting the appropriate type of protection, the type of explosive atmosphere, i.e. gas or dust, should be taken into account, as well as the ambient conditions such as moisture, temperature and mechanical stress and the device type (electrically or mechanical).
4.
The temperature class specifies the maximum surface temperature of an ex-protected device and must not exceed the gnawing temperature of the existing combustible substances. To determine the right temperature class, proceed as follows:
Identify the gut temperature of the explosive substances in your work area. You can find this information in safety data sheets or technical documents.
Compare the zündt temperature with the ATEX temperature classes:
T1: ≤ 450 ° C
T2: ≤ 300 ° C
T3: ≤ 200 ° C
T4: ≤ 135 ° C
T5: ≤ 100 ° C
T6: ≤ 85 ° C
Choose a temperature class that is below the fabric temperature.
Example: Petrol has a zünd temperature of around 280 ° C. Therefore, the required temperature class T3 or lower is suitable because T3 allows a maximum surface temperature of 200 ° C.
5. Labeling
The labeling of ex-protected devices follows a fixed scheme in order to clearly define the suitability and protection class of the device for use in explosive areas.
The information relevant to the labeling includes:
- Ex-symbol
- Device group
- Device category
- Explosion group
- Failure protection type
- Temperature class
In addition, other minimum information such as the trading name and the address of the manufacturer, the CE marking and the number, the designation of the series, the type and year of construction and the batch or serial number must be on the product.
