Flow meter for liquids - precise and durable

The magnetic-inductive flow measurement has proven itself over decades as a reliable technology in a variety of industrial applications.

It captures liquids with an electrical conductivity from 5 µs/cm and is therefore suitable for a wide range of media - from water, waste water and chemicals to food products such as juices or fruit -mate.

A flow sensor for water or for other liquids enables precise monitoring and control of the volume flow in a wide variety of applications.
Thanks to their robustness and precision, MIDS are indispensable in numerous industries:

  • Water and sewage management: Precise measurement of fresh and wastewater flows, also in sewage treatment plants.

How does a flow knife work for water and other liquid media?

The magnetic-inductive procedure is based on the physical law of electromagnetic induction: If an electrically conductive liquid flows through a magnetic field, which is generated by the measuring probe, an electrical voltage is created. This is directly proportional to the flow speed of the medium and can be recorded and evaluated via electrodes.

The heart of this measurement technology consists of three central components: a non-metallic or an insulating layer lined measurement tube, a powerful magnetic field generator and two opposite electrodes that detect the induced voltage. In order for the measuring principle to work reliably, the liquid to be measured must have a minimum conductivity of about 5 μs/cm.

This makes this method particularly suitable for water, waste water, acids, lye and many other industrially used liquids.


Fluid flow meter - further measurement principles in comparison

Depending on the application, medium and requirements, different measurement methods are used. In addition to the magnetic-inductive technology, there are a variety of other measurement principles that offer specific advantages and disadvantages such as:

  • Mechanical flow meter Use movable elements such as wing wheels or turbines to measure the flow. They are easy to use, but susceptible to wear and constipation, especially in the case of media with particles or high viscosities.

 

  • Ultrasonic flow meter Measure the flow without contact using sound waves and are ideal for non-conductive liquids or gases. However, they can be affected by air bubbles or solids in the medium.

 

  • Thermal flow meter Monitor flow quantities of gases or liquids. This method uses temperature differences to measure the volume flow, but is less suitable for media with greatly varying thermal properties.

 

  • Aperture measurement is based on the production of a differential pressure by a narrow point in the pipeline, whereby the flow from the pressure difference is calculated before and after the aperture.


Flow meter for water and other media - precise measurement with maximum advantages

Flow meters are essential components in numerous industrial applications because they enable precise monitoring and control of fluid flows. In security -critical processes, they make a decisive contribution to ensuring the smooth operation of systems and recognizing potential disorders at an early stage. For example, a flow meter in a cooling system can continuously monitor whether the water flow remains constant.

An unnoticed decline or a complete standstill could lead to overheating that causes expensive damage to the system. Without reliable flow measurement, changes in the fluid current often remain unnoticed. A water flow meter or a flow meter for different liquids recognizes critical conditions at an early stage and enables targeted countermeasures to be taken. In this way, failures can be avoided, repair costs and extends the lifespan of the system.


Water flow meters or alternative flow meters for liquid media also contribute to optimizing energy consumption. Pumps often run continuously, although a fluid current is not permanently required. A special advantage of modern flow meters is also its high precision and automation. Sensors and control systems work together, so that measures are taken immediately in the event of deviations. In addition, the devices can be flexibly adapted to individual requirements: limit values, reaction times and alarm messages can be programmed as required.


A decisive advantage of magnetically and inductive flow meters is also your wear-free design. Since they do not contain moving parts, they are not subject to mechanical wear and require only minimal maintenance. In addition, they are independent of pressure, density, temperature and viscosity of the medium, which makes them particularly versatile. In addition, they do not cause pressure losses and can be seamlessly integrated into existing pipeline systems.


However, there are also restrictions: a minimum conductivity of the medium of about 5 μs/cm is required to ensure reliable measurement. In addition, the maximum measurement temperature is around 200 ° C, and the minimum flow speed for a stable measurement is about 0.05 m/s.
