Flow measurement as a success factor

The flow measurement using a flow measuring device is a important process in various branches of industry and in technical applications. The volume or the amount of liquids or gases that flow past one point within a certain period of time are determined quantitatively.

There are different types of flow measurements that build on different physical principles. We at Seikom Electronic set with ours Measurement and control technology primarily on the Calorimetric or Thermal flow measurement. Here, partly heated sensors measure the ambient temperature. Throughout the media, such as gases or liquids, heat is removed on the sensors. Based on the flow measuring devices, the amount of the medium flowing past is based on this temperature waste reliable determined. Since the media temperature can also change in addition to the current, there is always one Reference measurement instead to ensure consistently high measurement quality.

Flow measurement - which flow meter is the right one?

The correct choice of your flow measuring device is of crucial importance, since it significantly influences the accuracy and reliability of the data recorded. In addition to the ambient conditions in which the measurement is carried out, the specific requirements of the process or the application are taken into account. This includes aspects such as the measuring range, the temperature and the pressure of the medium to be measured. In addition, it plays Type of medium An important role: Different liquids or gases have different physical properties that affect the choice of flow measuring device. The Integration of the measuring device Another point to be observed in the existing control or monitoring system. The communication interfaces and protocols must be compatible to ensure seamless integration.

Frequently asked questions

Which medium (e.g. gases, liquids) should be measured during the flow measurement?

Depending on the measured medium, different sensors and materials are used - the underlying thermal measurement principle is the same. When measuring air/ gases, the sensor elements are usually directly in the air flow and can reliably monitor the smallest flow changes. We use a closed sensor system for monitoring liquid media.

Which media temperature should be measured?

All measuring devices can be easily used for the flow measurement of industrial environments up to approx. 80 ° C. In addition, we offer sensors for hot environments up to 400 ° C. We use special sensor elements for these media temperatures. These have proven themselves in particular in the area of industrial stoves, heating facilities, heating registers, soldering systems as well as test and testing facilities, in machine and plant engineering, process technology, exhaust gas and emission monitoring.

Which signal output is required?

Seikom Electronic offers flow measuring devices with different signal outputs, including relative outputs and relative and linear analog outputs (0-10 V, 4-20 MA).

Relay outputs enable the monitoring of minimum or maximum flows by triggering a switching contact when specified values are exceeded or fallen below. They are ideal for air flow monitoring in air channels and machines. Device examples are RLSW4 to RLSW8 and NLSW45-3.

Relative analog outputs provide linearized output signals for visualization of the flow height and are often used in storage -programmable controls (SPS, PLC, DDC), as in the RLSW4A and RLSW5A models.

Linear analog outputs offer the most precise measurement and processing of the current for controls and fan controls, as with RLSW8.

These flow measuring devices are designed for various applications in flow monitoring and control and offer reliable and precise measurements for different requirements.

Which type of sensor is required?

Devices for flow measurement are available both in the compact design type (RLSW®) and as an evaluation unit for control cabinet installation (NLSW®) with a separate sensor.

With the compact construction (RLSW®), the sensor and evaluation electronics form a unit and the flow measurement and signal evaluation take place directly at the measuring point. The measuring devices are built for the robust industrial use and usually have the protective level IP65 (RLSW®8: IP54). The advantages of this type are on the one hand in the possibility of being able to read information directly at the installation location (LED or LCD display). On the other hand, signals are evaluated immediately and then transmitted via longer distances using a cable.

The construction method with evaluation unit (NLSW®) and separate wired sensor is suitable for control cabinet installation. This design is particularly suitable in rough process applications and if the signals are to be processed directly in the control cabinet. In addition, it is absolutely necessary for flow measurement in explosion -protected environments (ATEX zones 1 and 2).

If you have opted for a separate evaluation unit, please note that the associated sensor (available in different lengths/ immersion depths) is available separately.

By default, all sensors have a cable length of 2.5 meters. We are happy to manufacture sensors with longer cable connections (up to 30 m in environments up to 80 ° C) - just contact our team.

Are there any devices specifically for the requirements for explosion -protected areas or safety requirements such as Sil?

For explosion-protected areas, we use specially certified sensors and evaluation units for the ATEX zones 1 and 2 for flow measurement. For this you get both flow guards with a relay output (NLSW®45-3 EX) and with a relative analog output (NLSW®75-A ex). The scope of delivery includes the evaluation unit and two zener barriers for installation outside the explosion -protected area.

For environments with SIL1 requirements, we offer also certified devices for flow measurement (NLSW®45-3 SIL1 and sensor F3.x Sil1).

For applications with ATEX and SIL1 requirements, we have the NLSW®45-3 EX Sil1 device in our range, which meets both requirements. Here, too, the evaluation unit and the associated zener barriers are included.

Please note that both the evaluation unit and the sensor must be certified accordingly in order to meet the requirements for explosive areas and the SIL1 requirements. We would be happy to provide you with all certificates at any time.

What sensor length do I need?

For reliable flow measurement, a laminar and thus constant current is required without turbulence. Experience has shown that this current occurs in the middle of the air canal or tube. The sensor should therefore reach into the middle of the channel or tube.

Air flow sensors are available in the standard lengths of 50 mm (FX), 130 mm (FX.1), 165 mm (FX.2), 300 mm (FX.3), 400 mm (FX.4) or 500 mm (FX.5). In addition, special lengths are also possible without any problems.

By default, sensors with a depth of 46 and 150 mm are available for flow measurement of liquid media. Here, too, we are happy to provide special solutions if necessary.

In addition to the sensor length, it also applies to an optimal measurement result, the enema or outlet routes (in front of and behind the sensor- usually at least 5 times pipe or sewer diameter). The assembly directly behind a fan or angled tube or obstacle should be avoided due to turbulence.

Which process connection do I need?

Various installation options are generally available for installation in the air duct or pipe. All Seickom Electronic sensors for flow measurement have a thread connection and can therefore be screwed directly into the pipe.

Air flow sensors are supplied by default with a PG7 thread and can be screwed directly into the air duct or the pipe.

Using separately available reducing pieces, the sensor can easily be adapted to the process connections M16 x 1.5, M20 x 1.5 or G1/2-inch (or other connections).

By default, sensors for the measurement of liquid media (e.g. RLSW®7, F6.X) have a G1/2-inch or a G1/4-inch connection.

In addition, we offer support adapters with an external thread M20 x 1.5. Here you can gradually adjust the immersion depth of the sensor and thus easily identify the optimal measurement location for flow measurement. For regular cleaning of the sensor (e.g. in dirty media, in exhaust gas environments, etc.), it is possible to easily remove the sensors.

In addition, we offer you various assembly fans as accessories.

Are the devices TÜV certified?

Yes, we offer our selected devices for flow measurement with TÜV tree pattern test according to DIN EN 61010-1: 2011-07. The devices are certified and there are regular inspections and quality checks in our manufacturing workshops from our experienced team.
