What makes flow guards so essential with functional security?
Flow guards, which are classified according to Sil (Safety Integrity Level), are one of the security components in automated processes. They moniture critical functions and check the flow of liquids or gases. More precisely, flow guards are used to ensure that the current within a system - be it the flow rate of gases in a pipeline or from liquids in an industrial complex - does not fall under or above specified limit values. In addition to monitoring, it is equally one of the tasks of a flow guard Sil to initiate immediate measures in the event of a deviation from normal operating conditions, such as triggering alarms or closing valves to ensure the safety of the system and its surroundings.
Sil is a size that is used to assess the reliability of security functions. It is therefore not a direct property of a flow guard Sil. The higher the sil-value, the higher the reliability and the lower the probability of a dangerous failure.
Flow guard Sil1 and flow guard SIL2 - What is the difference?
The difference between a flow guard SIL 1 and flow guard Sil 2 lies in the degree of risk reduction, which it guarantees. Safety Integrity Levels Flow guards (SIL) are defined according to the international standard IEC 61508 and range from Sil 1 to Sil 4, with Sil 4 the highest level of safety. The functional security and its requirements are defined in the standard DIN EN 61508. If devices, sensors or controls have a sil-certification, you have met all guidelines of the strict norm.
A flow guard SIL 1 offers a fundamental level of reliability and is typically used in less critical applications, where the consequences of a system failure are low in comparison. Flow guards Sil 2, on the other hand, have a higher reliability and are designed for applications in which the consequences of failure can have far more serious effects and thus have higher security requirements. In practice, this means that a flow guard Sil 2 runs through stricter development processes, requires more demanding tests and validations and usually has sophisticated security mechanisms in order to reduce the risk of dangerous failure.
Flow guard ISO 13849
Flow guards according to ISO 13849 can be found in the area of machine safety and serve to monitor fluid or gas flows in automated systems. ISO 13849 is an international standard for the safety of control systems on machines and determines requirements for the design and integration of safety -related parts of control systems, including the evaluation of the associated risks. Flow guards ISO 13849 are able to initiate corrective measures such as switching off the machine or activating emergency procedures in the event of a malfunction of the current. They are critical components to ensure operational safety and the protection of personnel and equipment.
A flow guard ISO 13849 is designed and evaluated that it reaches a certain performance level (PL), which ranges from PL A (low) to PL E (high). The performance of levels such as flow monitoring Performance Level C or flow monitoring Performance Level D state to what extent a security system is able to operate a safety -relevant function under foreseeable conditions.
It was not until 2023 that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) revised ISO 13849-1. In the new version, essential requirements can be found, such as for determining the performance element. Overall, the revised norm is clearer, more precise and structured, which essentially makes it easier to choose the performance element under an individual risk assessment.
Where are flow guards used?
Flow guards SIL are basically suitable for a variety of industrial applications in which the reliable monitoring of flow of liquids or gases is essential for operational safety and production process. The typical locations include chemical systems, oil and gas industries, power plants, water treatment plants as well as the pharmaceutical industry, paper manufacturers, systems for surface coating, paint and color producers and much more. Together in a personal consultation, we find out whether and which flow guard Sil fits your requirements.
This awaits you in our range of flow guards Sil
In addition to “pure” flow guards SIL you also receive models that meet the ATEX standards and are therefore suitable for use in explosion-hazardous areas. While Sil refers to the required safety level and the reliability of control systems, ATEX, as an EU directive, ensures that devices and protection systems can be safely operated in potentially dangerous environments.
Certified flow guards Sil and ATEX bring a high degree of security because they meet the strict international standards for explosion protection and functional security. In the application, this means that a flow guard Sil, which is used in an ATEX-classified zone, is not only subjected to regular and thorough safety ratings in order to minimize the risk of functional failure, but is also constructed in such a way that it does not represent a ignition source in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
Areas of application for this combination of security certifications can be found primarily in the oil and gas industry, in chemical processing systems, in the pharmaceutical industry and wherever flammable gases, vapors or dusts are processed. In such critical environments, security components must meet the highest security standards in order to reduce the risk of accidents and to ensure the protection of personnel and the environment.
With us you will find the evaluation unit air flow guards NLSW®45-3 with SIL1 certification. This is awarded the Safety Integrity Level 1 (Sil1) according to IEC 61508/IEC61511 and, if you have a higher claim to your flow guard SIL, also alternatively available with SIL2 certification. The universal air flow guard comes with a switching exit that is suitable for control cabinet installation and was checked as a tree pattern by TÜV Nord according to DIN EN 61010-1: 2011-07. The measuring range is 0.1… 30 m/s. In addition, the commissioning of the flow guard SIL is quickly done and without effort.
Search for a flow guard SIL for ATEX areas is the evaluation unit NLSW®45-3 EX SIL1 is your first choice. The Sil1 certification takes place according to IEC 62061, which corresponds to the flow guard Sil to the performance level C according to EN ISO 13849-1. In combination with two supplied zener barriers, it can be used in the ATEX zones 1 and 2. Developed for demanding industrial areas, the flow guard SIL has a measuring range from 0.1 to 30 m/s with media temperatures from 0 ° C to 60 ° C. The sensor is also suitable for control cabinet installation. In addition, with the evaluation unit NLSW®45-3 EX Sil2 you will receive a flow guard SIL2 for use in ATEX zones 1 and 2.
From February 2024, all sil-classified flow guards will also be available in addition to a relay output with an analog signal (4-20 MA). In addition, sil-classified flow measuring devices for liquids will also be available shortly. Our team works with high pressure on the development and certification of the devices.
